Felix Oswald Sidney Mason was born in 1919 in Burwell (Newmarket Q4-1919 3B:849), son of Offa William and Rosa MASON (née LINSEY), of
Newnham Farm, Burwell.
In the 1939 register his parents, father [6-8-1882] a farmer; mother [26-7-1887] and brother Douglas G [24-10-1922] a butcher's assistant, were living at Newnham, Low Road, Burwell. There are 5 closed records. |

The 2nd battalion of the Cambridgeshire Regiment arrived in Singapore ahead of their 1st battalion, on 13th January 1942 and were straight into action on
the 16th, around Batu Pahat. Forced to retreat towards Sengarang on the 25th they found they were cut off. Ordered to destroy all guns and transport, they were
then to attempt to break out through the jungle in small groups. Amazingly many did get through to Singapore, 70 miles away.
Felix was captured on 15th February 1942 when the British surrendered Singapore to the Japanese. He died somewhere along the southern part of the Burma-Siam railway Originally buried at Teimopnta (km 271.17) on the railway, he was re-interred in Kanchanburi in February 1946. |
